Three of the Best Straight Flying Disc Golf Distance Drivers

Throwing Straight

A dead-straight path is often the best way to navigate a fairway, but it's also the hardest flight pattern to achieve. A golf disc naturally wants to fly on an angle. Whether throwing a finesse hyzer flip or a firm flat laser beam, getting a disc to hold a long straight line is one of the most advanced skills in the game.

But this post isn't about how to throw straight, it's about the best straight flying disc golf drivers. You can learn more about that in this video I made if you are interested:

The following drivers will make your next straight shot a bit easier. There is bound to be a disc on this list to match your unique throwing style. These discs will have the right blend of high-speed turn, extended glide, and minimal fade necessary to thread your next tunnel shot.

You can find all of these disc golf drivers for sale on our disc store.

The Leopard has stood the test of time as an excellent control driver for players of all skill levels, a staple of the classic Innova starter pack for over two decades. With a comfortable rim, manageable speed, and minimal fade, it is one of the easiest drivers on the market to throw straight. While it does not get huge distance, the reliable Leopard will keep you in the fairway and out of trouble.

While it is a popular fairway driver for beginners, plenty of professional disc golfers throw the Leopard. The slightly faster Leopard3 is found in several pro bags, and also comes in gorgeous halo plastic. We also have the Leopard in Star plastic.

Since 2011, the FD has been a staple fairway driver in the Dismania Originals line. It combines maximum glide with gentle turn and fade, making it a perfect disc for throwing straight with pinpoint accuracy. This is one of those molds that is great for all skill levels, with beginners using it as a stable workhorse and advanced disc golfers using it as a hyzer flip machine.

The FD has a somewhat complicated history. Up until 2020, Discmania used Innova's factory to produce the FD.

When they split from Innova and moved production to Europe, Discmania was forced to leave the mold behind. Innova simply rebranded the original FD as the "Dark Rebel" Fairway Disc. For a more thorough explanation of the evolution of this disc, watch this video:

Discmania has since redesigned the FD. Time will tell how the new disc will perform, but you can still purchase the tried and true original FD in the meantime. We have the FD "Dark Rebel" available in both Star and Champion plastic.

Discraft Passion

A Blue Discraft ESP Passion Driver

Dimensions

  • Height:`1.6cm
  • Diameter: 21.6cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.2cm
  • Rim Width: 1.7cm

Flight ratings

  • Speed: 8
  • Glide: 5
  • Turn: -1
  • Fade: 1

Popular Plastics

  • ESP

The Passion is the latest release in 5 time World Champion Paige Pierce's signature series of discs. The vast majority of signature discs are special runs of popular molds that already exist. The Passion is different because Pierce was intimately involved with its design and development. Check out this video to learn her thought process when creating this disc.

The Passion's wide diameter and rim are unique in the fairway driver category. This wide-diameter driver performs like a turbocharged midrange. Many reviews liken it to a faster version of the Discraft's flagship straight-flying midrange, the Buzzz. Initially, it will have a different hand feel. But once mastered, you will be rewarded with a point-and-shoot workhorse that will fly dead straight with controlled speed.

These are hot commodities. For now, the Passion is only produced in ESP plastic, and the swirly blends look amazing. Check out our selection here, but act quickly.

MVP Inertia

A Blue Disc Golf Driver Named Inertia

Dimensions

  • Height:`1.4cm
  • Diameter: 21.1cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.2cm
  • Rim Width: 2.0cm

Flight ratings

  • Speed: 9
  • Glide: 5
  • Turn: -2
  • Fade: 2

Popular Plastics

  • Plasma
  • Neutron

If you like discs with flat tops and low profiles, the Inertia could be your next straight flying workhorse. With only 1.4cm of height and a wide 2.0cm rim, this fairway/distance hybrid has a comfortable and aerodynamic hand feel, particularly in the forehand grip.

The Inertia's generous -2 turn makes it an excellent option for mastering the hyzer flip. Once it gets up to speed and flattens out, the high 5 glide rating will take over and keep the Inertia aloft and floating towards the target on a straight line. Once it slows down, a reliable low-speed fade will have it finishing with some hyzer drift.

We have the MVP Plasma Inertia available in our shop. This soft blend makes the Inertia fly a bit more understable, making it perfect for beginners trying out their first distance driver.

Axiom Insanity

An Orange-Rimmed Axiom Insanity

Dimensions

  • Height:`1.4cm
  • Diameter: 21.1cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.1cm
  • Rim Width: 2.0cm

Flight ratings

  • Speed: 9
  • Glide: 5
  • Turn: -2
  • Fade: 1.5

Popular Plastics

  • Proton
  • Plasma
  • Neutron

The Axiom Insanity is another straight-flying driver from the MVP discs family. This disc has the same flat and low profile as the Inertia but with a shallower rim that is easy to grip. Equally suitable for backhand and forehand throws, this disc has the perfect combination of flight characteristics to fly straight for maximum distance.

This disc is beginner-friendly and could be the best distance driver for a brand new player. The Insanity will not have the high-speed stability to be a reliably straight distance driver for advanced players with above-average arm speed.

Kastaplast Falk

Kastaplast Falk on White Background

  • Rim Depth: 1.1cm
  • Rim Width: 1.9cm

Flight ratings

Popular Plastics

  • K1

Kastaplast is well known for having some of the best plastic blends in the game. After their recent partnership with Latitude 64, we can expect a lot more of their discs on the market. The Falk is the perfect introduction to this growing company. Its reliable turn and extended glide make it a straight flyer with speed to spare.

Countless online testimonials insist that Kastaplast's K1 plastic is the best blend in all of disc golf. When it comes to hand feel, disc golfers often need to choose between soft or stiff, grippy or slick, firm or flexible, etc. K1 splits the difference between these extremes and is universally praised for having a comfortable feel.

Discraft Avenger SS

Discraft Avenger SS Driver with Purple Stamp

Dimensions

  • Height:`1.8cm
  • Diameter: 21.4cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.2cm
  • Rim Width: 1.9cm

Flight ratings

  • Speed: 10
  • Glide: 5
  • Turn: -3
  • Fade: 1

Popular Plastics

  • Z Line
  • ESP

The Avenger SS ("Super Straight") is an understable and beginner-friendly version of the popular distance driver, the Avenger. As the fastest disc on this list, the Avenger SS takes a solid throw to get up to speed, but its high -3 turn rating makes it more forgiving for those with less power. Release it flat or with a bit of anhyzer to achieve a consistent straight flight.

Advanced players will take advantage of the high-speed turn by ripping it on a hyzer release and watching it flip to flat and glide for maximum distance. Fast discs with wide rims often want to fade with a hard hyzer, but the Avenger SS has minimal fade for a distance driver.

We have this fast and understable driver available in Discraft's durable Z Line plastic. This stiff blend will take a beating and still hold the line.

FAQ's

Q: What kinds of disc golf distance drivers are best for straight shots?

Medium speed discs with a bit of turn and minimal fade will be the easiest to throw straight.

Q: What is the best straight disc golf driver?

This varies depending on your power level, but we recommend the Innova Dark Rebel (previously known as the Discmania FD) as the best all-around straight flyer.

Q: I can get my midrange disc golf discs to fly straight, but not my drivers. What am I doing wrong?

It is challenging to get fast and stable discs to glide straight. Throw slower drivers like the Innova Leopard (6 speed) or Legacy Patriot (7 speed) flat or with a bit of hyzer to unlock straight laser beams.

Q: My go-to straight driver is turning over too much. What happened?

As discs take a beating, they develop more and more high-speed turn. A stable disc will become more and more understable as time goes on, making them less and less reliable for straight shots.
