Narrow down your putter: Understable, Stable, Overstable
Approach discs usually stable or overstable to help fight the wind and provide a reliable flight path.
If you’re a disc golfer who’s serious about their short game, you know how important it is to invest in approach discs that you love. That shot before you hit the basket requires a great degree of accuracy that only a trusty approach disc can give you. With several iterations of risk and reward when it comes to upshots, you’ll want to master the art of throwing your approach discs well.
These discs are designed to give players as much control as possible over their putts, upshots, and short, accurate drives. Approach discs come in a wide range of plastics, models, and speeds for every type of unique grip and putting style and for players of all abilities. These discs are considered the slowest, coming in with speed ratings of 1 to 3 with bodies that have deeper rims and blunt noses that are designed to fly like the classic Frisbee.
Every disc golf course is different, and sometimes it will serve you better to take the approach shot before your putt instead of aiming to hit the chains directly from outside of the circles. Disc golf greens can be tricky with water, hills, or tree placements nearby. That’s where approach discs (and trusting your gut) come into play. Many people lump putters and approach discs into the same category, but we think of them as similar to the squares and rectangles theory, where all putters are considered approach discs, but not all approach discs are technically putters.
Another way to think of the approach discs and putters is to consider the nature of the disc and how it affects the flight you’re looking for. Overstable approach discs like the Innova Pig or the Discraft Zone are overstable and will want to hit the ground quickly- making them not a great choice for shooting at the basket. When using discs like these, you’ll need them to get as close to the basket as possible to set you up for an easy putt. However, a floatier putter like the Discraft Luna, for example, is designed to reliably grab the chains when thrown from a short distance.
There are a few different styles of putting, so depending on what form you’re comfortable with, there are many putt and approach discs on the market to choose from. Regardless of whether you prefer spin putting, push putting, spush putting, or have zero clue what any of those words mean, everybody can stand to benefit from a reliable P&A disc. If you watch the professionals, you may see some interesting choices for approach discs, but they’re also accounting for weather conditions and trusting their discs to achieve the desired shot.
