What is an understable distance driver?

Understable distance drivers are the bread and butter of many disc golfers’ bags. There are so many reasons why people of all skill levels love these versatile discs: they’re not only the most beginner-friendly, but intermediate players also love them because they generally go farther. The pros will also utilize an understable distance driver as a tool for certain shots they’re facing.

What makes a distance driver understable?

The first tell-tale sign will be to take a look at the flight numbers: these discs will have a higher turn rating than fade. This means that the disc will turn more to the right for you if thrown RHBH; this is beneficial (especially if you’re a beginner) because that means the disc will stay a little bit straighter before it fades, giving you easy distance!

These discs are also great for hyzer flips, turnover shots, carving a line through the woods, and strategic rollers (Sidewinder, anyone?) Also, as your driver beats in, it will become even more understable, so it may be worth it to experiment with different molds until you find the one that feels the best after a few rounds.

Just a note: understable discs will also generally be lighter in weight than overstable discs, which makes them touchy in windy conditions. But in calm weather or if you’ve got a nice tailwind, reach for your favorite understable driver and watch it soar!

If you aren't looking for something understable you can always shop all of our distance drivers, or check out our stable distance drivers, or overstable distance drivers.
