    MVP Discs History

From the beginning, MVP Disc Sports has been a family affair. Before founding the company in 2010, brothers Brad and Chad Richardson worked in their father's injection molding shop in Michigan for many years. There they honed their skills with plastic, becoming experts in the two-step injection molding process.

    MVP's 'Overmold'

As plastic experts and avid disc golfers, they recognized a potential foothold in the disc market. They set up shop in their parents' barn and started making discs. By utilizing the two-step molding process they learned from their father, they developed a unique product in disc golf: the overmold. They patented the new technology in 2011.

The overmold style uses two different plastics for the flight plate and the rim. A denser and heavier blend is used for the rim (or "overmold"), while a lighter blend is used for the flight plate (or "core"). This concentrates weight on the disc's perimeter, thus increasing the gyroscopic effect of flight.

    The Gyro Effect

The "gyro effect" is not simply an effective marketing tool; it is a measurable scientific fact. Gyroscopic force is a part the flight of all discs, regardless of the manufacturer. It's why a high-speed driver can absorb much more speed and spin than a putter. Wider rims bring more weight to the disc's perimeter, regardless of whether there's an overmold.

MVP claims their designs and manufacturing processes maximize the gyro effect. While the degree to which MVP's overmold technology affects any given throw is marginal, science dictates that it generates some amount of extra stability and distance potential. In a game of inches, it could be the difference between a par and a birdie.

MVP leaned into this heavy science-based approach in their marketing. They named discs after scientific terms, trademarked the "gyro" terminology, and created a distinctive brand voice that attracted a lot of customers. The business grew steadily for the first decade, allowing the Richardson brothers to move out of the barn and into a new headquarters in 2015.

    Two More Brands Are Born

They expanded their product line by introducing Axiom and Streamline products under the MVP umbrella. Axiom is a unique lineup of molds that uses different plastic and color combinations. Streamline discs are MVP plastics without the overmold.

    James Conrad's "Holy Shot"

They also grew their team of sponsored pros, signing top 10 player James Conrad for the 2021 season. This was their most significant signing to that point, and the bet paid off immediately. Conrad won the 2021 World Championship by making the "Holy Shot," a 250-foot throw-in considered the greatest shot in disc golf history. The "Holy Disc" was an Axiom Envy.

MVP was already on the rise, but the "Holy Shot" supercharged their profile. Two years later, they signed one of the most popular pros in the world, Simon Lizotte, to a multi-million dollar contract. A great player and promotor, Lizotte joining MVP is yet another step towards the company entering the upper echelon of disc manufacturers.

Beyond the gyro effect, fans praise the company for its consistent high-quality plastic. Their Electron blend is considered by many to be the most durable baseline option on the market, and their Eclipse plastic is the brightest and longest-lasting glow-in-the-dark blend ever made. Their discs are also well-known for their flat tops and comfortable grip.

    MVP Disc Plastics

    Electron

MVP's Electron plastic is a baseline blend with the best grip, lowest durability, and cheapest price tag. Available in firm, medium, and soft varieties. Very popular for putters and midranges.

    Cosmic Electron

Cosmic Electron is just the typical Electron plastic but with multi-tone color patterns that have a "burst" design.

    Neutron

Neutron is MVP's "flagship" blend, this premium plastic is stiffer and slicker than baseline. Most of MVP's lineup is available in this blend, and most molds make their debut in Neutron. Discs fly truest to their flight ratings in this plastic and it is their most popular premium plastic.

    R2 Neutron

R2 Neutron is MVP's newest plastic, this is a recycled blend that flies very similar to regular Neutron but is slightly more grippy.

    Cosmic Neutron

Cosmic Neutron is just MVP's typical Neutron plastic but with multi-tone color patterns that have a "burst" design.

    Proton

Proton plastic is stiff and extremely durable, this blend has a translucent look and is similar to Innova Champion or Discraft Z. Discs fly a bit more overstable in Proton and will maintain original flight patterns for years.

    Plasma

MVP's Plasma plastic is an eye-catching blend with a pearlescent sheen. Softer and more flexible than Proton, and has similar durability to Neutron.

    Eclipse Glow

MVP's Eclipse Glow plastic is a glow-in-the-dark premium blend that offers the brightest and longest-lasting illumination of any glow plastic on the market.

    Fission

Fission is a lightweight plastic blend that has had air bubbles injected into it. Besides creating super light discs for less powerful arms, this allows MVP to decrease the density of the flight plate relative to the rim, thus increasing the gyroscopic effect. It is also very grippy and durable.

    Prism

MVP's Prism plastic is a unique combination of two different plastics. The rim is made with Proton, while the flight plate is Neutron, Proton, or Plasma. Prism discs are very pretty, very scarce, and relatively expensive.

    MVP Discs

    Putters

Spin: 2.5 / 4 / -2 / 0 - Finesse putter that will hyzer flip and floats straight at low speeds.

Glitch: 1 / 7 / 0 / 0 - The MVP Glitch is a lightweight specialty disc with maximum glide. Made for long, floaty bids at the basket or a pre-round game of catch.

    Anode: 2.5 / 3 / 0 / 0.5 - A neutral putter with a somewhat deep hand feel

Ohm: 2 / 5 / 0 / 1 - High glide and minimal fade make this a straight flyer at low speeds. Not the most reliable for approaches or tee shots.

Nomad: 2 / 4 / 0 / 1.5 - The first in 2021 World Champion James Conrad's signature series of discs, it can absorb a bit of extra torque and speed. It has a slightly deep hand feel and a bead on the bottom of the rim.

Ion: 2.5 / 3 / 0 / 1.5 - Slightly overstable with a deep hand feel and a bead on the bottom of the rim. Will fly straight with a gentle fade on full power shots.

Atom: 3 / 3 / 0 / 1 - Low profile putter with a flat top and a bit of extra speed. The furthest flying putter in the MVP lineup, it is a point-and-shoot type that can hold a variety of lines.

Entropy: 4 / 3 / 0 / 3 - Very overstable utility putter that is excellent for forehands and scramble shots. Great for flex shots, tight hyzers, and windy conditions.

    Midranges

    Uplink: 5 / 5 / -3 / 0.5 - Maximum turn and minimal fade make this a hyzer-flip machine. Excellent choice for beginners.

Reactor: 5 / 5 / -0.5 / 1.5 - Neutral flyer designed to fly straight with a gentle and reliable fade. MVP players describe this as their "workhorse" midrange, much like the Innova Roc or Discraft Buzzz.

Matrix: 5 / 4 / -1 / 2 - Slightly overstable but with enough turn and glide to allow shot shaping at medium power.

Deflector: 5 / 3.5 / 0 / 4 - Very overstable utility disc that can absorb maximum speed and torque without turning over. No matter the release angle, this disc will always finish with an aggressive hyzer fade.

    Fairway Drivers

Signal: 6 / 5 / -3 / 1 - A beginner-level understable driver/midrange hybrid that does not take much speed or snap to activate the turn and glide phases of flight. Provides maximum distance with minimal effort.

    Relay: 6 / 5 / -2 / 1 - Another beginner-level understable driver/midrange hybrid, but can handle a bit more speed than the Signal.

Servo: 6.5 / 5 / -1 / 2 - Neutral flyer with a very reliable fade. A solid choice for beginner and intermediate arms, especially for forehand throws.

Volt: 8 / 5 / -0.5 / 2 - The very first driver the MVP produced, the Volt has stood the test of time as a fairway workhorse for players of all skill levels. Great glide, just a bit of turn, and a very reliable fade. It will fly overstable for beginners and intermediate-level players.

Terra: 8 / 5 / 0 / 3 - Overstable and ultra-reliable fairway driver for flex shots, forehands, and windy conditions. The MVP equivalent of the Innova Firebird or Discraft Raptor. A part of James Conrad's signature series of discs.

Resistor: 6.5 / 4 / 0 / 3.5 - Extremely overstable utility driver with a flat top and low profile. As the name implies, MVP's Resistor will "resist" turning for even the most powerful arms.

    Distance Drivers

MVP has such an extensive selection of distance drivers for sale, that it might be difficult to choose where to start. Note how there are no 10, 12, or 14-speed options. This is because MVP explicitly ties their speed ratings to rim width:

    • 18.5mm = 9
    • 21mm = 11
    • 23mm = 13
    • 24.5mm = 14.5

This system provides customers with useful points of comparison as they build a bag. For example, if you like the feel of an 11-speed driver in your hand, a combination of a Wave, Photon, and Phase should cover most flight lines with the same hand feel.

Orbital: 11 / 5 / -4.5 / 1 - Extremely understable driver that is very easy to turn over. Best for weaker arms looking to throw hyzer-flips and moderate to advanced arms looking to lay down rollers.

Impulse: 9 / 5 / -3 / 1 - Very understable driver with slightly less speed than the Orbital or Relativity. The rim is not quite as wide, making it easier to grip and rip.

Relativity: 14.5 / 5.5 / -3 / 1.5 - With a maximum legal rim width of 2.5cm, this is an extremely fast driver with a good amount of turn. Meant for long-distance turnovers, towering hyzer-flips, and tailwind bombs.

Inertia: 9 / 5 / -2 / 2 - A comfortable grip and reliable turn make this an excellent introduction to the distance driver category. Allows intermediate arms to throw hard without losing accuracy and control.

Wave: 11 / 5 / -2 / 2 - For those that have hit the 300-foot plateau, the Wave will offer some extra distance right out of the box, especially in lighter weights.

Catalyst: 13 / 5.5 / -2 / 2 - A souped-up version of the Wave with a wider rim and more speed. A reliable turn makes it easy to flip up for maximum distance lines.

Teleport: 14.5 / 5 / -1.5 / 2.5 - This speed demon has the maximum legal rim width of 2.5cm and will flip up and get massive glide for players with average to above-average arm speed. Somewhat touchy and requires a combination of power and finesse to control with accuracy.

Tesla: 9 / 5 / -1 / 2 - Combines a flat top and a low profile with the perfect flight characteristics of a workhorse control driver. This one is easy to grip and rip, especially on the forehand side.

Octane: 13 / 5 / -1 / 2 - Very fast with a subtle turn and reliable face. Predictable flight patterns make it a distance driver workhorse for those with moderate power.

Zenith: 11 / 5 / -0.5 / 2 - Another in the James Conrad series, the Zenith is a workable distance driver made with the advanced player in mind. With a bit of turn and relatively gentle fade, it will provide a lot of glide and shape various lines.

Photon: 11 / 5 / -1 / 2.5 - Reliable bit of turn will help achieve maximum glide for players with above-average arm speed. Shop Photons here.

Nitro: 13 / 4 / -0.5 / 3 - Very fast and overstable with a subtle turn that allows for some shot shaping.

Dimension: 14.5 / 5 / 0 / 3 - Extremely fast and overstable driver with maximum rim width. Its aggressive fade and sharp edge will generate massive skips. Power players can take advantage of its glide, particularly on forced flex shots.

Motion: 9 / 3.5 / 0 / 4 - Very overstable and reliable utility disc that will always finish on hyzer. It has the thinnest and most comfortable rim in MVP's overstable distance driver class.

Phase: 11 / 3.5 / 0 / 4 - Provides the same flight as the Motion with a wider rim and more speed.

Energy: 13 / 4 / 0 / 4 - Combination of maximum speed and maximum overstability. Pro-level power players can utilize this as a control driver. For those with less power, it will be a utility disc that fades early and often.
