Discraft Big Z Athena
1
The Discraft Big Z Athena is the sixth disc in Paul McBeth's signature line, a stable fairway driver that plays a lot like a Teebird3. Big Z is Discraft's stable, durable variant of Z plastic, a touch more opaque and gummy, built for a control driver you can trust year after year.
Flight Numbers: 7 / 5 / 0 / 2
Big Z holds up to heavy rounds without going soft, with a slightly gummier feel in the hand than standard Z that grips well in cool weather. It keeps this mold's fade dependable for a long time, so the Athena you throw today still finishes the same way after a full season of tee shots and approach lines.
Thrown flat it goes dead straight and holds a chosen hyzer angle for most of the flight before a reliable, not dumpy fade closes it out left for a right hand backhand. It will not turn over even for a bigger arm, which makes it a point and shoot tool rather than a max distance driver, and it shines on forehand shots in the woods where accuracy matters more than raw speed. Lighter weight Athenas fly easier and give a beginner a semi-overstable driver that holds a hyzer line in calm or windy conditions, while bigger arms use the same disc to place drives on tight, technical fairways.
