The 12 Most Overstable Midrange Discs

by Denis Flaschner, Professional | PDGA #49081

Every bag needs at least one beefy midrange that fights the wind and always finishes on hyzer.

Overstable midranges are some of the most useful discs in the game. They handle spike hyzers into tight gaps, forehand approaches in the wind, and those "I just need it to go left no matter what" shots that come up more often than you'd think. From the Justice (a fan favorite for years) to newer options like the Malta and Pyro, there are more choices than ever.

Here are the 12 most overstable midranges you can buy right now, ranked and reviewed so you can pick the one that fits your game.

Dynamic Discs Justice

Dynamic Discs Forehand Midrange Disc

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.3cm
  • Height: 1.7cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.3cm
  • Rim Width: 1.5cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 3
  • Turn: 1
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics:

  • Lucid
  • Moonshine

The Justice has long held the title of the most overstable midrange on the market. Especially popular for forehand shots, this disc will turn make almost any release angle turn into a spike hyzer. Not a great option for beginners, this is for seasoned disc golfers who can throw harder than average.

Give the Justice some height and it will dive to the ground on an almost vertical path. With an anhyzer release, it will immediately begin to turn back to hyzer, allowing for some extremely tight flex shots. The Justice has a lot of speed for a midrange, and will get a small amount of skip.

The Justice is most popular in durable Lucid plastic. This premium blend is available in our store now.

MVP Deflector

An MVP Neutron Reactor

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.5cm
  • Height: 2.0cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.3cm
  • Rim Width: 1.6cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 3.5
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics

  • Proton
  • Neutron

With the introduction of the Deflector onto the scene, the Justice has some competition for the most overstable midrange title. The Deflector's massive 1.6cm wide rim is the thickest of any midrange we can find. If you are a power player who needs a midrange that will never, ever turn over, then this is the disc you are looking for.

Only the biggest arms will be able to get the Deflector to fly straight for any amount of its flight. For an average player, the moment this disc leaves the hand it immediately takes a hard hyzer turn and dives to the ground. Like the Justice, it has quite a bit of speed and will get a lot of skip for a midrange.

The Deflector will fly true to flight numbers in MVP's premium Neutron plastic, while it will be even more overstable in the extremely stiff and durable Proton blend.

Innova Gator

Innova Gator Midrange

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.2cm
  • Height: 1.9cm
  • Rim Depth 1.4cm
  • Rim Width: 1.3cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 2
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics

  • Champion
  • Metal Flake Champion
  • Glow Champion

The Gator has long paired perfectly as an overstable compliment to Innova's flagship mid range, the Roc (featured in our best Innova midranges roundup). The two discs have very similar hand feel, so if you are a Roc fan then the Gator is a natural pairing. Released on hyzer, it maintains the hyzer line, no matter what.

This overstable mid has a prominent bead under the rim, and most runs of this mold have a bit of dome on top. The somewhat rare flat top Gators are prized possessions. The combo of slight dome with a big bead make this disc a bit less comfortable in a forehand grip.

Alongside the classic run, Innova also makes the slightly faster Gator3. This version has a nice flat top that feels great in a forehand grip, and is available in our store now in beautiful Champion Glow plastic.

Axiom Pyro

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.5cm
  • Height: 1.6cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.3cm
  • Rim Width: 1.6cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 4
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 2.5

Popular Plastics

  • Neutron
  • Proton
  • Plasma

While the Deflector is an extreme meathook, MVP's sister company Axiom makes the Pyro as a more throwable alternative in the overstable midrange slot. It's a bit easier to get some glide from the Pyro before the reliable hyzer fade takes over. It is particularly useful for flex shots in the 200-250ft range.

With a low profile and a wide rim, it has an almost driver-like hand feel that is great for forehands. In the super-durable Proton plastic, the Pyro is a consistent and predictable midrange for intermediate and advanced players. For an especially gorgeous option, check out the Plasma blend.

Discraft Buzzz OS

Discraft Buzzz OS overstable mid range

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.7cm
  • Height: 1.7cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.2cm
  • Rim Width: 1.3cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 4
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 3

Popular Plastics

  • Z Line
  • ESP

The Discraft Buzzz OS ("Over Stable") is a beefier cousin to the popular Buzzz. With less turn and a far more aggressive fade, the Buzzz OS is an excellent compliment to the straight-flying Buzzz. Many players bag both, as it offers different flight characteristics with the same hand feel.

Pull out a Buzzz OS anytime you are facing a headwind or you need a reliable hyzer finish. When released with a bit of anhyzer, the Buzzz OS will perform a gentle flex line. It is most popular in durable Z-Line or ESP plastics.

Discraft Drone

Discraft Overstable Drone

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.5cm
  • Height: 2.0cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.3cm
  • Rim Width: 1.5cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 3
  • Turn: 1
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics

  • ESP
  • Z-Line

With a rare +1 turn rating, the Drone is even more overstable than Discraft's Buzzz OS. It holds up to maximum speed and torque, and will fight the strongest headwinds. The Drone has a tall profile with a bit of dome, making it less comfortable for some players.

As far as Discraft plastics go, ESP offers good grip and will be slightly more workable, while Z-Line is stiff, slick, and ultra-durable.

Dynamic Discs Fugitive

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.7
  • Height: 1.9
  • Rim Depth: 1.3
  • Rim Width: 1.5

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 3
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics:

  • Supreme

Originally released in 2012, Dynamic has updated the Fugitive for the 2023 season. They lowered the height and widened the rim on this overstable midrange, making it more comfortable in a forehand grip and giving it an even stronger fade rating.

Dynamic's new Supreme Series discs utilize a special new plastic blend that combines great grip with excellent durability. Dynamic partners with Latitude 64 to manufacture their discs, and the Supreme blend is the same plastic used in Latitude 64's acclaimed Grand Royal blend.

Check out two-time World Champion Ricky Wysocki take the Fugitive for a test drive in the video below. Check out our selection to try it yourself.

Westside Bard

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 21.7
  • Height: 1.9
  • Rim Depth: 1.3
  • Rim Width: 1.5

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 4
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 3

Popular Plastics

  • VIP

The Bard is a beaded midrange with a thick and beefy rim. It is not quite as overstable as some of the other discs on this list, and bigger arms can get decent glide out of the Bard. This is a solid overstable option for beginners and intermediate level players.

We have plenty of Bards available in Westside's popular VIP plastic. This somewhat soft and flexible blend maintains above average durability and a grippy hand feel.

Kastaplast Kaxe

Kastaplast Kaxe Midrange

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.0cm
  • Height: 1.9cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.3cm
  • Rim Width: 1.5cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 6
  • Glide: 4
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 3

Popular Plastics

  • K1
  • K3

With a small diameter, low profile, and extra speed, the Kaxe stretches the definition of an overstable midrange. This is a bit of a hybrid, fitting right between a mid and a fairway driver. The Kaxe is excellent for forehand shots, and is perfect for players who want the feel of a driver but the slower pace of a midrange.

Kastaplast is famous for their plastic blends. The premium K1 blend is a bit slicker and more durable than the baseline K3, but both offer a great hand feel.

Discmania Mutant

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.7cm
  • Height: 1.8cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.2cm
  • Rim Width: 1.3cm

Flight Numbers

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 3
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics

  • Neo

With their exodus from under the Innova umbrella, Discmania has moved production to Europe and re-tooled their lineup. The Evolution line Mutant is essentially a replacement for the MD5, the classic Dismania overstable midrange. This disc shapes up to be a slower version Tilt, the freakishly overstable driver Dismania released last year.

As per the Discmania webite, the design principle for the Mutant was to create a disc "with no round surfaces." It has a very blocky, almost squared-off rim that encircles an extremely flat flight plate.

The Discmania Neo blend is a premium plastic that is similar to Dynamic Lucid and Westside VIP. We have the Mutant available now in this durable plastic.

Discmania MD5

Discmania S-Line MD5

Flight Ratings

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 2
  • Turn: 0
  • Fade: 4

Popular Plastics

  • S-Line
  • C-Line

The MD5 is Discmania's premium overstable midrange, and it's manufactured in-house at their Finland factory (which makes it a different disc entirely from the Innova-made Mutant already on this list). With a fade rating of 4, it's one of the beefiest mids available from any manufacturer. Throw it and it dumps. Hard. That's the whole point.

The flat top and thick rim profile make it comfortable for forehand grips. It actually sits a little lower in the hand than the Justice, which some players prefer for sidearm approaches and spike hyzers. The low glide keeps it from sailing past your landing zone, and you can trust it to fight out of any angle. Even on a slight anhyzer release, the MD5 will muscle its way back to a hyzer finish. S-Line is the grippier option, while C-Line holds its beefy stability even longer.

We have the S-Line MD5 available in our store. If you want the most overstable mid you can find, this belongs in your bag.

Discraft Malta

Discraft Z Fly Dye Malta

Flight Ratings

  • Speed: 5
  • Glide: 4
  • Turn: 1
  • Fade: 3

Popular Plastics

  • ESP
  • Z Line

The Malta is Paul McBeth's overstable midrange workhorse and it slots perfectly between the Buzzz OS and the extremely beefy Drone in Discraft's lineup. That +1 turn rating tells you everything you need to know. This disc resists turning over more aggressively than most overstable mids, making it a go-to for forehand utility shots and windy days.

The flat top and thick rim feel solid in a forehand power grip, and the 4 glide gives it more carry than pure utility discs like the Zone or Toro. You can actually shape shots with the Malta instead of just parking spike hyzers. Need to get around a corner with a hard-fading forehand? The Malta has the distance to reach and the stability to finish. ESP plastic adds some grip and a touch less stability, while Z Line is the more overstable option that holds up to heavy use.

We have the Z Fly Dye Malta available in our store. The fly dye patterns look great and every disc is unique.

FAQ's

What is the most overstable midrange disc?

The most overstable midrange disc is a tie between the Dynamic Discs Justice and MVP Deflector. Both are very beefy mids that maintain stability in the most extreme conditions. Noodle arms should stay away from these overstable monsters. Check out this article about disc stability for more information about what makes a disc overstable.

When should you use an overstable midrange?

You should use an overstable midrange when you absolutely must finish a throw with hyzer fade or when you need to fight a strong headwind.

What are the best shots for an overstable midrange?

The best shots for overstable midranges are spike hyzers, tight flex shots, and short approaches that need to get on the ground quickly.

What are the worst shots for an overstable midrange?

Straight shots, turnover lines, and tailwind throws are not great shots for these discs. Basically anything that requires some glide.

What is a good overstable midrange for beginners?

Beginners should check out the Buzzz OS or Westside Bard for more throwable options.
